from Common Entrance in favour of our more balanced, exciting and modern Bridge Curriculum indicated our boldness in pursuit of a more inclusive and long-lasting academic culture.
Over these six years I have loved every opportunity to
see the pupils perform, whether it is on the Richardson stage for the Nursery Christmas carols, or on a grander platform in front of a packed Durlacher audience performing an action- packed musical item, or lining up a penalty on the 1st XI pitch. These are the moments in which character is enhanced, when one learns something about oneself even if it is not realised
at that moment, and when the thrill of success or the anguish of failure can be separated in an instant. These are also the moments in which children learn to express themselves, make decisions and escape from other aspects of life by being wholly engaged and focused. For me that’s crucial for one’s mental development.
Like many prep schools, St Andrew’s was established
as a boys’ boarding school but has transitioned into a fully co-educational day and boarding school. Unlike many other schools though, the boarding ethos remains at the heart of the school with a longer day and so much activity that unites the day and boarding community healthily. This last year has reduced the opportunities for more day children to flexi- board but it will return and, whatever the climate, Androvians will continue to be industrious in their daily lives and their collective purpose shall stick in my mind as a benchmark for
other pupils in other schools.
Ultimately, what I take pride in at St Andrew’s is the sense
of individualism and personal responsibility combined with
a shared set of values in pursuit of a common goal which is
to improve the society around us.We try to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit in each and every Androvian but from the angle that they can use these skills to help others who are perhaps less fortunate than themselves. As I step away from the school, this is a legacy of which I am very proud.
I am also proud that much of what I have written above is endorsed by ISI’s compliance and educational quality inspection report which was published in July 2021. It highlights the momentum in the school’s ambitions and the wonderful work and effort of all the pupils and staff.
Despite the challenges in the world right now, and with the increasing strength and synergy in the relationship with Eastbourne College, St Andrew’s has stepped forward
with confidence over the last few years and has defined
its personality more clearly. I said from the beginning that I wanted the pupils to be the heartbeat of the school and they are. An Androvian is industrious, kind, compassionate and down to earth and these are the qualities I hold dear. I have loved my six year journey on HMS Androvian; it has been a tremendous place to work, I have learnt a lot off many people and St Andrew’s shall remain in my heart. Floreat St Andrew’s!
