Local currency in/out: VND15,000,000 when arriving/leaving from/to any country except China. Travelers from/to China may carry VND50,000,000.
Foreign currency in: free. Amounts over USD5,000 or equivalent must be declared if reexport is intended. Out: up to USD5,000 or equivalent. More if declared at arrival.
Easily exchanged currencies: CAD,EUR,GBP,THB,USD
A BRIEF MONETARY HISTORY
Jan 1955: Vietnamese dong replaces Indochinese piastre.
1959: new dong (North) = 1,000 dong (North)
1975: new South Viet Nam dong =500 piastres (South)
1978: Viet Nam dong = 1 new dong (North) or 0.80 new South Vietnam dong. Sep.1985: (new) dong = 10 1978 dong.
