Natsu Matsuri
2021
Virtual
For the second year in a row, Natsu Matsuri/Obon was held virtually. Through the JCCC website, everyone was able to access links to festival related activities. From craft activities for children to explanations about some Japanese summer celebrations to recipes to try at home, there was something to appeal to everyone. With the coordinating help of the New Japanese Canadian Committee of the JCCC, we were also able to offer great insight videos from 11 GTA Japanese Restaurants. Video highlights included views of their patio dining areas and summer menu features. The restaurants and staff can’t wait to welcome you in person!
But the highlight of the event was Bon Odori. In coopera- tion with Toronto Buddhist Church, the JCCC hosted a zoom event with over 80 individual log ins. But many of those log ins represented more than 1 viewer. With 4 dancers in the Kobayashi Hall and 20 to 30 dancing from home, it was a great presentation. We were also glad to see a few additional dancers join into the audience participation dances. It’s not the same as dancing together, but it was still a lot of fun!
We capped the night off with prizes of gift certificates from the Japanese Restaurants featured on our website.
The JCCC would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to all the dancers. We would also like to thank Toronto Bud- dhist Church and the Bon Odori Committee. Special thanks go to Eleanor for the overall coordination, to Rev. Ouchi for emceeing the evening, to Laura and Yoshie for assisting with the zoom session and to Constantin for the technical and staging preparations.
We hope to see everyone at our Natsu Matsuri/Obon Festival next year!
