HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES
The YMCA of the Suncoast improves the community’s health and well-being
by helping families understand the importance of physical activity and a balanced diet through a variety of educational programs.
In 2021, the Y continued its success with Chronic Disease Prevention programs such as blood pressure self-monitoring and the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program, which has been shown
to reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent and 71 percent in individuals over age 60.

William Eagleson, otherwise known as “Billy” has been a part of the Y community for several years. Before joining the Y, Billy took a serious fall, which broke his spine and left him in a wheelchair. He contacted the Y to find programs that would help him stay active, and learned about the Y’s Silver Sneakers program. Billy is now an active member at the Hernando County YMCA, visiting twice a day, five days a week. Through the Y, Billy has not only found a place to exercise, but a community that cares. The support of his fellow Y members and friends, are something he leans on as he works towards his goal of walking again.
