Nilsson rst appeared at Covent Garden in 1957 in a new production of the Ring conducted by Kempe and over the next twenty years London saw her many times where roles included Turandot, Leonore (Fidelio), Amelia (un ballo in maschera), Elektra and Isolde. It was with Nilsson in Tristan und Isolde (Jess Thomas sang Tristan) that Sir Georg Solti’s truly inspiring 10-year tenure as Music Director at the Royal Opera House came to an end in July 1971. In 1993 Nilsson was presented with the Silver Medal of the Royal Opera House in recognition of 25 years as a guest artist.
