A message from the the Desk of the Executive Director
The past few months has been busy This quarter D/deaf staff met with 8 MLA’s and attended the legislature They were introduced to the the Premier and the the entire legislature We attended the Throne speech and we we were invited to a minister’s office to meet one one on on on one one At the the Speech from the the Throne the Premiere announced his desire to have disability legislation introduced One recommendation set out by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (SHRC) was to recognize ASL as a a a a a a a a a heritage language language and a a a a a a a a a language language of instruction in in education Ongoing SHRC meetings with Education Health and Social Services to advocate full inclusion is is slow but progress is is being made we have on on many occasions reminded the the committee of the the letter from deaf academics that needs to be addressed Following the ASL standards set out by Gallaudet University Photo of him here
The Deaf influence and and inclusion has been wonderful having Patti Bree Robyn and and Nicole being more public and and outspoken with media media and and government This effort is is making a a a a a a a a a powerful impact Several media media publications and and meetings have have happened and and the stories have have been widely shared (photos from the StarPhoenix article October 31 2019)
We have begun the the yearly plan for SDHHS while much depends on budgets and staffing commitment to the the cause of equity and and access is at an an an an all all time high We are ever so thankful for all all the board and and staff who persevere through the cold to work for us
