Aggrey Benjamin Irons has developed an international reputation as one of the leading psychiatrists in the region
Born in Kingston, he graduated from St. Georges College 1967 and the University of the West Indies 1974 where he also completed post graduate qualifications 1979. He was awarded the Aaron Matalon prize in Psychiatry – Class of 1974.
Dr. Irons has published multiple papers and monographs together with joint research projects on major psychiatric topics.
A past President of the Medical Association of Jamaica and a former Senior Medical Officer of the largest mental institution in the Caribbean, the Bellevue Hospital, for 21 years; Dr. Irons was pivotal in transforming that hospital to a more efficient clinical unit. A Past President of the Jamaica Psychiatric Association, he was instrumental in initiating policies and planning in the areas of mental health policy and legal reform. He is also a past member of the Medical Council of Jamaica and a International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
He has been a member of the Medical Team to the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and the World Junior Games in 2006 and is also a certified boxing judge and referee.
A recipient of the prestigious Monsignor Gladstone Wilson Award for Excellence from St. George’s Old Boys Association; Dr. Irons is also a member of the St. Georg’s College Hall of Fame. He is a Founding Director and Chairman of the Health Committee of the CHASE Fund (2003 -2012). He is the present Chairman of the Consie Walters Cancer Care Hospice, Vice Chairman of the Board of Management of the University Hospital in Mona and Vice Chairman of the Board of Management of the Bellevue Hospital.
On august 2012 Dr. Irons was awarded the National Honour of Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) by the Government of Jamaica for his work in Psychiatry.
In his private life dr. Irons is married to Jacqueline since 1975 and they have two sons, Frantz and Marcus. He is the grandfather of Benjamin and Elizabeth.
