Internship at Port of Spain, General Hospital (POSGH).
UK training: Moorfields, East Surrey, St. Georges Hospitals.
FRCS (Lon) 1982, FRCOphth 1994.
Practice focus: Anterior segment, cataract, cornea, refractive surgery.
Left hospital service 12 years post-FRCS. Mission - to advance the practice of Ophthalmology. Founded Caribbean Eye Institute (CEI), the first Ophthalmological group practice in Trinidad.
CEI has lead the developments in Ophthalmology in Trinidad and Tobago with the introduction of newer therapies, diagnostic and surgical technologies. Diagnostics and laser facilities are neutrally location and available to other colleagues.
Leadership: Founding member, past president and secretary of the Ophthalmological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (OSTT), and the Ophthalmological Society of the West Indies (OSWI). The OSWI secretariat has resided at CEI over 25 years.
Past president of the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association.
Training initiatives at CEI: i) one-year employment of pre-university sixth form graduates. ii) Allied Health Professionals in Ophthalmology to international certification. iii) Optometry Students. iv) Paediatric residents. v) Ophthalmology residents and recently qualified Ophthalmologists engaged in career development exercises.
Golfing and skiing became part of life at 60. Skiing was dropped after 8 years but the psychological benefits of golf along with gardening and cooking continue to attract.
