      Memories
Memory 1
One day while assisting the Registrar in a surgical case we were constantly being pestered by the circulating staff nurse. I talked the Registrar into asking her to urgently get us some “refined shark’s liver oil!” She went all over the theatre searching without success. Other staff members started coming into our OR to find out what was going on when she realized the joke we had pulled on her. We all laughed but she was not amused. Eventually, she smiled and joined the fun and thereafter was a changed, pleasant soul.
Memory 2
One day whilst attending the daily balcony medical tutorial with Dr. Knox Hagley, I saw this group of nurses pass by. This particular one seemed quite interesting and vibrant, so once the teaching was done I went searching for her. Eventually I located her on ward 8, quite busy giving an injection, so I greeted her with “Hi, how are you?”...she wasn’t amused and asked me to leave her alone! Well, I persisted with daily visits until, one day, she smiled and things changed for the better. She’s still smiling and this year it will be our 41st anniversary.
Thanks to all my wonderful class of 1974 members for the warm reception as I was a refugee from class of 1973!!
Life Highlights
 Jan and I adopted two teenage girls from Colombia in 2009. They spoke no English on arrival and I abruptly became the official family tutor for English, Math, Science, Soccer and everything else! They have worked very hard and have done very well. Luisa (24) graduates College this year with
a degree in Exercise Fitness and is heading to Physical Therapy school. Lina (20) won the math prize in high school three years in a row and is a sophomore in College and heading to medical school. They have become a vital part of our family along with our son, Mike Jr. (34), and I couldn’t imagine life without them.
We have been fortunate to travel to all Continents, but riding the Japan Shinkansen Bullet train at 200 mph, looking out at Mount Fuji has been my favorite sight.
