9. PARACHUTE ACTIVITY WITH HIDING: ‘The Aliens are Hiding’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Someone is Hiding’)
“It’s time to play with the parachute again!” The children sit around the imaginary parachute and move it from side to side to the pulse for the first two lines. For each, “Peek-a-boo!” the children quickly lift the imaginary parachute up high into the air and then down again on “I see you!” Repeat the song with the real parachute. Next choose two or three children (including the birthday child) to be the aliens and curl up and hide underneath the parachute. Repeat the song and for each, “Peek-a-boo!” you reveal the hidden children. Repeat until every child has had a turn. Once the game has been played a few times, encourage the children to sing the words with you. If you have a party assistant or if there is a willing parent nearby, ask them to hold the opposite end of the parachute and encourage the children to all go under together as you sing the song one final time.
The aliens are hiding, are hiding, are hiding. The aliens are hiding. Where could they be? Peek-a-boo! I see you!
Peek-a-boo! I see you!
10. CHASING GAME: Catch the Astronauts!’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Tiny Tim’) Put on your posh teacher voice. “And now you’re going to have a lesson on how to be a real astronaut. I am the teacher and you are my students. Follow me.” Sing the song acapella and perform the actions as indicated by the lyrics.
“All astronauts must know how to walk on the moon!’
The astronauts are walking, the astronauts are walking, the astronauts are walking, in the space
class.
“All astronauts must know how to hide from meteors!”
The astronauts are hiding...
“And, of course, every astronaut must know how to fly a space ship!”
The astronauts are flying... The astronauts are sleeping... The astronauts are waking...
Now I’m going to be the alien and chase you and see how many astronauts I can catch!”
Chase the children as you sing the final verse.
The alien is chasing...
Ask the birthday boy/girl if they would like to be the next alien. If they say no, choose someone with their hand up who managed to escape you. Remind the next alien that when you sing “The alien is chasing” they must catch as many astronauts as possible. Repeat and then choose child who “managed to escape” to be the next alien (otherwise they’ll all just be caught on purpose). Repeat as many times as necessary (for example if there is no pass the parcel and/or not many children you may get through the activities quickly and so extend this one, or if you are running behind you could perform the activity just two or three times).
11. PASS THE PARCEL: ‘Doctor Who Theme’ performed by Murray Gold (if requested) Make it clear to the children before you play the game that “everybody gets a turn.” Play the track and the children pass the parcel around in a circle. When you pause the music, the child holding the parcel opens a layer and keeps the gift inside. Use a remote control to pause the music so you can help the younger children pass the parcel and open it when it is their turn. The children can eat their treat, put it in their pocket or give it to an adult to mind so that it does not distract them from the rest of the party.
NB: Make sure to check the party entertainer guidelines for instructions on making the parcel and for maximum spending amounts.
