The Dachshund as a Tool for the Search and Recovery of Drowned Persons
Since the war in South Africa at the end of the 19th century dogs are well known as “tools” for Search and Rescue work to find missing persons.
We know dogs as hunting companions for much, much longer. On the other hand, the use of dogs to locate cadavers in bodies of water, called Search and Recovery is relatively
new.
A lot of dog breeds are capable of doing this work, however, I prefer Dachshunds.
A Dachshund is suitable to work as a Search and Recovery K9 if he has the desire to find, plus a
strong and resilient play drive.
The training for a tested and useable Search and Recovery dog usually takes about 2 years.
