The Roman Centurion (Cornelius) heard from the angel that both he and his household were not saved (Acts 11:13,14). Upon hearing the saving message from Peter, he was convinced, filled with the Holy Ghost and was baptized in Jesus Name in the same hour (Acts 10:l-f).
The Philippian jailer heard the full gospel message from Paul, and was convinced, being baptized at the same moment (Acts 16:30-34),
• The Ephesians were believers of John the Baptist's doctrine. They heard the saving message of the gospel, were convinced, were bap tized in the Name of Jesus Christ, and filled with the Holy Ghost to complete their salvation (Acts 19:1-6: Ephesians 1:13-14).
• The Gentiles were converted when Paul preached the gospel (Romans 15:17-19; Acts 15:3). They were obedient to all that the mes sage of reconciliation with God required of them (II Corinthians 5:20).
8.5 The Scripture Distinguishes Two Types of Sins
A The Original Sin - Inherited Sin
God gave to Adam a commandment while he was in his state of inno cence: "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Genesis 2:17). When Adamtransgressed this law, the curse of God fell upon him and thenatureofeternaldeathenteredintothehumannature. Thisistheorig inal sin. This is how the apostle Paul describes the condition of sinful man after the fall: "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned...by
one man's offense death reigned by one...by offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation...by one man's disobedience many were madesinners,...sinhathreigneduntodeath"(Romans5:12-21). Theoriginal sin is transmitted from generation to generation; the whole human race was present in Adam's seed. This is the reason why Paul declared in his Epistle to the Ephesians, "you...who were dead in trespasses and sins...were by nature the children of wrath, even as others" (Ephesians 2:1,3). This same condition is deplored by Paul speaking to the Jews and the Gentiles, who are all imder sin, "As it is written. There is none righteous, no not one...all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:9,10,23). We read in Galatians 3:22, "But the scripture hath concluded all under sin." It is the
same diagnosis the Colossians received: "And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh..." (Colossians 2:13). David cried out, "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me" (Psalm 51:5).
