50 ♦ Bible Writers' Theology Chapter Four
God created every thing by thinking and knowing, but to us God is omnis cient (all knowing) of the possible or the actual. One must not be confuse omniscience with causation. Foreknowledge and foreordination are not nec essarily the same.
God knows the future. God's foreknowledge does not mean that we should accept fatalism. It is still important for us to exercise our freedom of choice in every situation and respond to God biblically. For instance, God knew the doom of unrepentant Nineveh, but their repentance after the preaching of Jonah brought about their escape from the wrath of God. Scriptures say that "all things work together for good to them who love God..." (Romans 8:28-30; Ephesians 1:4-12). There is no evil intention, in the
foreknowledge ofGod Qames 1:17). Just because something morally evil has been predicted, this prediction does not remove human responsibility from the perpetrator (Matthew 18:11; John 13:27; Acts 2:23; Exodus 4:21; John 13:21).
Itis awesome toconsider that God already knows whether or not we will be saved. Yet by faith, we can have that same knowledge, if we will contin ue to believe and obey God.
C Omnipotence
The Lord God is omnipotent (Revelation 19:6). This means He is all-pow erful and able to do whatever He wills (Psalm 62:11; 1 Chronicles 29:12; Romans16:25).1Timothy6:15states. Heis"blessedand only Potentate, the King ofkings, theLord oflords." (See also Job42:2; Psalm 115:3; Matthew
19:26; Isaiah 43:13; Habakkuk 3:6; Mark 14:3;, Luke 1:37; Revelation 4:8; (Genesis 17:1; and Exodus 6:3).
Although He has all power, there are some things that God cannot do because they are contrary to his nature:
• •
•
He cannot lie (Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 6:18; Titus 1:2).
He cannot look with favor on iniquity Gob 8:20,22; Luke 13:5; Isaiah 1:20; Nahum 1:3).
He cannot deny Himself (11 Timothy 2:13).
• He cannot tempt or be tempted to sin 1:13; Matthew 4:7; Deuteronomy 6:16).
• He cannot do things that are absurd or self-contradictory. Such as, make a material to be spirit, or a wrong to be right (Exodus 34:7).
God can do what He wills to do, but He does not necessarily will to do
