The teaching sta will gather tomorrow
to thank those who are leaving Southland Boys’ High School and to recognise their contribu ons to the rich history of the school. The commitment of the teaching sta is once again something I wish
to praise. Not only do the students of Southland Boys’ High School receive a high quality of teaching in the classroom, they also have the opportunity to take part in a wealth of co-curricular ac vi es, which is key to the development of the young men in our care.
From the performance stage to the sport’s eld and then out into the open countryside, the students have poten al to challenge themselves and gain valuable life skills and experience. This can only
be possible with the con nued e orts of the sta , and for this they deserve our gra tude.
These e orts are very much ongoing; we have sta and a group of young men who le today for a 30-day trip to Nepal, during which they will carry out vital community work and 1st XV of 2019 are very busy fundraising and preparing for a trip to South Africa early in the New Year.
It is also key that the strong base of parent and community support for the school is recognised and thanked. The PTA whose hard work and cheerful demeanour is the backbone of many school func ons and the ever strengthening Old Boys’ Associa on, whose me and energies are spent suppor ng the students of the school they are so proud of.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank one speci c group of students, the outgoing Prefects of 2018. These young men, led by Head Boy, Tim Price, and under the guidance of sta have been obvious and instrumental as student leaders this year. They have introduced a number of legacy events and once again raised the bar of expecta on for the incoming prefects of 2019. This would also be true of the leavers of 2018 who have set a strong example to the younger members of the school and as they depart today for the next chapter of their lives we wish them all well and remind them of the School mo o, which applies now more than ever; take the learnings from school and use them well in life.
Southland Boys’ has once again in 2018 stood above others in the spor ng arena and con nued to make its presence felt in this context with many regional, na onal and interna onal champions gaining
well deserved success. It is also notable that our boys achieved very well in the academic arena with a pleasing number of scholarships being awarded to our leavers this year.
It is a con nual and ongoing goal to raise the pro le of the academic and cultural successes of the School to meet the already formidable performances in the spor ng arenas. In this way we will con nue to educate the whole boy and produce
rounded and balanced young men now and into the future.
As the year draws to a close and the summer stretches before us please remember to take me for your family and friends and be safe on the roads and near the water.
I wish you all a happy and res ul break and may we all have a prosperous new year.

RECTOR’S SPEECH
2018 has been a year of new challenges for Southland Boys’ High School. These have been faced on a number of di erent levels and each has brought its own tests.
Change is always a challenge and can be a very di cult and me-consuming process. This has certainly been the case for us this year and as the term draws to a close it
is right for this to be acknowledged here today. What should also be acknowledged is that those e ected by the changes of 2018 have a long associa on with the school and have taught, over the years, both fathers and sons who sit before us today.
Sta changes are also a natural part of
this me of year and I would like to wish
all of those who are moving on to other opportuni es every success in their future, as we prepare to welcome new members to our team for 2019.
