SBHS REPORTS
Board of Trustees
Kia ora
Good Evening Mr Coe, school sta , dis nguished guests, parents, whānau, caregivers and students of Southland Boys’ High School.
‘Pre-eminent’, as de ned by the Concise Oxford dic onary means; Outstanding, foremost, leading, excellent, pres gious, renowned. These superla ves are not mere words they are the Vision for this school,
a vision upheld by the Board and strongly supported by our Rector. Personally, I will never stand and make a statement that
I do not inherently believe to be correct. Pre-eminence needs to be established in all pillars of educa on, academia, trades, culture, art and sport. This is who we are and this is where we are heading. School of rst choice for boys within this city, province and beyond is the future.
Pre -eminence cannot be the status quo and requires change. Change is in reality constant and is a natural stage of evolu on. We as a Board also fully understand that change, par cularly signi cant change, is di cult which is the case for the school this year. We live in a village, we are all related
in one way or another. Whether it be by family, neighbourhood, work, sport, school, university, we are all connected. Change a ects us all professionally and personally but the vision and belief are real. The commitment to the vision is unwavering with forward progression and momentum con nuing.
During this year of change and progress the Board would like to thank a number of people. Firstly Simon Coe our Rector. Mr Coe is not from elsewhere, he is from Southland. Simon and his family are valued members of our village,
they are our people. On behalf of the Board we thank Simon for his strength and commitment to the vision. To all sta within the school thank you for your professionalism when it counted. Finance – The school has stared down adversity, recreated a robust model and from there we have moved forward. The new hostel roof is a factual example of what a robust structure can achieve.
I would also like to acknowledge
the contribu on of all ancillary sta , Coldstream House management, our Kaumātua, Herewini Neho, caretaking sta and cleaning sta . I would also like to thank the following organisa ons that are intrinsically linked to this school and to our community – the Old Boys’ Associa on and the PTA. Also, The Ministry of Educa on an “industry good “organisa on who have supported
the Board and the school with sound professional advice, including providing tangible resource whenever required. This has been appreciated.
For my Board – Willie Menlove, Jan Ormsby, Ken Dykes, Peter Heenan, Sarah Brown, Charlene Withy. I have always been fortunate to have strong Board members but our present board is unique in the fact that all external members have been previous Board chairs. Coupled with a full range of governance skills this has been of great bene t to me and this school. Teacher’s representa ve Warren Ruwhiu is insigh ul and steady and our Student representa ve Ma Maginn has wisdom beyond his years. Also a welcome to our new student representa ve Kaea Edwin. All of your e orts have been immense and much appreciated.
On behalf of myself and my fellow
Board members the strategy is clear.
The Board and the school has a clear vision, “SBHS the school of rst choice for boys.” Under the leadership and guidance of our Rector Simon Coe this vision is becoming a reality. I do not make statements that I know are not real and in a few years’ me this vision will be obvious in all levels within this school. SBHS will ascend to a level of excellence, a new legacy that this school and this province will be extremely proud of.

Coldstream Hostel
Coldstream Hostel has been providing a home away from home for over 100 boarders, for many years. At Coldstream, we endeavour
to provide a suppor ve family environment that encourages academic, emo onal and physical development for boys from all parts of Southland and throughout New Zealand.
The boarding establishment is a comfortable, welcoming place where students are given the opportunity to mature and take their place in the wider community. Coldstream boys’ keep Southland Boys’ High School true to its rural heritage, values and tradi ons. Boarders at Coldstream Hostel have always been high achievers, their names gracing academic, cultural and spor ng Honours Boards around the country and interna onally.
Each year we endeavoured to make improvements to the Hostel environment. 2018 has been a special year where we
have replaced the roof, purchased a van
to transport the boys to their a er-school ac vi es as well as redesigning the Queen’s Drive gate to allow vehicles to enter and exit at the same me.
As ever, the constant support from the Southland Boys’ High School Management and Board of Trustees has helped facilitate these improvements and to provide Coldstream with a be er boarding environment.
Thanks to all Coldstream sta for their commitment, compassion and caring of our hostel boarders.
2018 has been a very busy year and as I re ect on the past 12 months, I recall a lot
of fun mes and posi ve behaviour. I wish the leavers all the best for their future and look forward to welcoming our new intake for 2019.
