Tlie Scie ce Club
Although one of the smallest clubs, the Science Club achieved much during the year. Membership was con ned to approximately twen y of which the majority was from the Senior School. The members divided them selves into groups of three, with each group devising some project of personal interest. Two of the most interesting subjects were the production of a fuel-cell by M. Diack, J. Oliver and I. Stanley, and an experi ment in thin-layer chronotography.
The club would like to thank Mr. Martin for his advice and willing assistance on both projects and in the running of the club.
O cers elected were:-B. Soutar {President), J. Hen derson (Secretary), M. Diack.

the end of 1965. It was felt that because of the high level of the minimum standard necessary to contest the top three places at Trentham, an early start would be beneficial.
With the aid of the Invercargill .303 Ri e Club the team was able to practise whenever they chose, and by late February, after two sharpening " team " shoots at Tapanui and (uno cially) at the Southland Cham pionships it was con dent on improving on last year's performance and knew on its best form that it was capable of contesting the top championship places.
The team was Ian Murray, Stephen Brown, John Scandrett, Brian Wallis and Seddon Wallis. After hold ing a strong second position we slumped unaccountably at 600 yards and nished third equal, which was, how ever, still pleasing and a big improvement on the School's rst performance at Trentham. Ian Murray top-scored with 97 points (the third best individual score regis tered) out of a possible 105. Brian Wallis, who shot a possible at 500 yards (35 out of 35), nished second with 94.
As usual the team had a most enjoyable time. We are most grateful to Messrs. R. and J. Rowley and all members of the Invercargill Club who helped make the trip such a successful one. We thank also Mr. McBride, of Mossburn, who helped with transport on our arrival at Wellington, and, of course, Mr. Ryder who accompanied the team throughout its ordeal.
In the summer term the club looks forward to using its own .303 ri es, and even more to the prospects of competitions with other Southland schools, even if at rst this is conducted on a postal basis.
Rowing. Club
This has been a season of tremendous progress for the club. An over-all stepping-up of activity has brought satisfying results. For the rst time ever the School competed in the New Zealand Schoolboys' Champion ship Regatta, the Maadi Cup, with surprising results. The club settled down well after Christmas to the hard training needed. A hard core of thirty rowers trained nearly every night and most competed at various re gattas. Crews this season were:-
This year the Chess Club was supervised by Mr.
Berridge, who quickly managed to arrange us in some semblance of order. A President (T. R. McIntyre) and Secretary (R. Henderson) were elected and the rst games were soon under way.
To incite more interest in the club a ladder was formed for the thirty members-an increase on last year's total. The top__places on the ladder were held by C. Ward (U.6a), T. Wilson (U.6a) and R. Hender son (L.6a).
Unfortunately, the championships did not seem to interest the members as very few of them entered. The winner has yet to be found.
The club met during the lunch-hour and on Wed nesdays in Room 9. The club would like to thank Mr. Berridge tor his assistance and interest.

.22 Ri e Shoo g
The Ri e Club this year was very popular and it
was necessary to eliminate the 70-odd hopefuls to about 30 members. Many of the younger school had never red a .22 ri e before and their enthusiasm far surpossed their ability. Practice, however, brought an encouraging improvement in their performance.
Shooting is held on the School range. During the rst and third terms selected details shoot 10 rounds each week in an e ort to gain the elusive possible of 50 points. The better shooters became prominent as the third term progressed and eventually six members con tested the nal round for the senior trophy. Among the rst-year boys Roger Weir proved most consistent.
the senior section the competition was considerably stronger. Ian Murray, with consecutive rounds of 48, won the cup for the 1965-66 season. J. H. Matheson took the cup for the junior championship section. The club would like to thank Mr. Ryder for the time he spent in coaching and supervising during lunch and after school.
.303 Ri e Shooting
While the main body of the club re .22 ri es, a senior group in conjunction with the Invercargill Ri e Club practised ring .303. This year the S.B.H.S. team made its second trip to Trentham to compete in the New Zealand Inter-Schools' .303 Shooting Champion ship. With three members of the previous year's team still remaining, the team by no means lacked experience. With this in mind, seven boys began training towards
