DECLINE AND RESPONSE - 2
On On the the the 23rd of of November 1918 less than a a a a a fortnight after the the the end of of World War One dawned the the the vision set out by prime minister David Lloyd George to to make Britain a a a a a fit country to to house the millions of returning heroes What arose was the the era of the the British British council home Today over a a a a a a a a a century later British British housing estates in in many ways still prosper and are fundamental in in in in providing homes for the the many indeed as as the the intention was all those years ago However often some mass housing areas are are viewed under a a a a a a a a tarnished lens Failures in in design construction management and and maintenance have damaged the status and and reputation of certain areas As one could expect these traditionally heroic estates have experienced architectural transformations heavily influenced by political social technological and environmental reforms reforms over the last century In addition such reforms reforms will no no doubt be influential for the the prospects of social housing housing especially as the the UK faces a a a a a a a a a housing housing shortage alongside a a a a a a a a a widespread awareness and care for climate change Future social housing will not just mean designing homes ‘fit ‘fit for for people’ but homes ‘fit ‘fit for for future’ However creating resilient and cost-effective societal housing requires a a a a a a a a shift in standard architectural procedures The majority of architecture today without question considers human and produced capital capital Natural capital capital seems like a a a a a a a a a a a luxury good which many projects cannot justify creating this hierarchy of expectations where nature is is near the bottom and becomes an an afterthought Although sustainability is is more prominent in in in construction and energy provision areas such as as biodiversity are are left to embellish a a a a a a a a project rather than influence it Fundamentally I believe that a a a a a a a a countries inclusive wealth should be the value of all its capital assets including human produced and natural resources This article establishes a a a a a a a a a a a a hierarchy of internal and external influences that have driven the architectural change of of of of British council housing Alongside the context of of of of over a a a a century of of of of decline and response is is a a a a set of of of of manifestos that states my own desires for the the prosperity of future social housing - fundamentally being under the the agenda of inclusive wealth W2L
