Kauri and teak deck and topsides. It was an excellent sea and game fishing boat which we again named the Snowgoose (known as Snowgoose II).
This formed the foundation of our boat partnership and relationship for the next 22 years. A partnership of that duration would be considered extraordinary in boating circles, we were the odd couple not unlike Steptoe and son. Our differences were highly measurable, but it worked, we were inseparable, we relied on each other; there was trust, commitment, and integrity. I learnt so much from Alf; no one could have taught me more about the sea, boating, fishing, mechanics, war time history, aboriginal history and life in Japan (as a result of his service in Japan as part of the occupying forces at the end of the war).
He was a knowledgeable man, respected by his peers, however he chose to live alone in an old timber home in Watson Street Bondi, accompanied occasionally by his long-term friend Francis and me. He was distrusting of humankind and once stated, “You are one of the only persons that I trust and then I have my doubts”. That was deemed a compliment.
We travelled to game fishing tournaments out of Cairns, Lizard Island and other locations on the east coast including New Zealand. Our most popular annual tournament was at Port Stephens where we also owned a caravan together; it was used to house family and friends on site at the Bardouroka Caravan Park.
