My mother Hetty Ritchenberg (maiden name) was one of six children born to Matilda and Mark Ritchenberg on 20th October 1919. There were four girls, the oldest Annie, then Edie, Hetty, Sadie and two boys Reggie and Sidney. Matilda originated from Austria and Mark originated from Poland. The events and history as to when and how they arrived in the UK is unknown. My recollections of where they resided in the UK is not clear, other than the family were divided between London and Manchester.
As mentioned previously, the war years were difficult for my parents as they were separated at times, my father living in Manchester trying to continue his medical studies and work to support his family, and my mother and I living in Clitheroe as a safety measure from the continual bombing raids. My mother worked as a seamstress to support our family income. I have vague memories of my early childhood up to 1946, one year after the war ended.
