COLLABORATION GRONINGEN SEAPORTS, GASUNIE AND SHELL
Northern Netherlands commits
to large- scale green hydrogen
FOR MANY YEARS ALREADY, THE NORTHERN NETHERLANDS HAS PLAYED A PIONEERING ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT
OF GREEN HYDROGEN AS A CLEAN, CLIMATE-NEUTRAL ENERGY CARRIER OF THE FUTURE. THROUGH THE AMBITIOUS NORTH2 PROJECT, GRONINGEN SEAPORTS, TOGETHER WITH ENERGY NETWORK OPERATOR NEDERLANDSE GASUNIE AND SHELL, AIMS TO MAKE THE FINAL BREAKTHROUGH. “ONLY THROUGH LARGE-SCALE USE WILL IT BE POSSIBLE TO REDUCE THE COSTS OF GREEN HYDROGEN,” SAYS CEO CAS KÖNIG
OF GRONINGEN SEAPORTS, WHICH MANAGES THE PORT OF DELFZIJL AND EEMSHAVEN.
In essence, climate-neutral, green hydrogen is not difficult to produce, as Cas König demonstrates in person during the interview. Using a simple demonstration set from a hobby shop, he swiftly separates hydrogen from water on his conference table and then uses a mini electrolyser to power a small fan to generate wind. This all may seem very straightforward, but König’s small-scale demonstration also symbolises the challenges facing the production of green hydrogen.
‘As project partners, we will soon decide whether we will advance NortH2 to the next phase’
