commissioning of the new sea lock in 2022. A new suitable location has been found for the dolphins at Buitenkade 2 of Tata’s service port. The advantage of this new location is that ships heading to and from the sea lock have more space to pass one another. In addition, mooring space for barges and small sea-going vessels for Tata Steel has also been taken into account between the dolphins and the quay.”
Gerrits continues: “In any case, the situation in the port estuary is changing and that is why all possible future ship movements are carefully evaluated through simulations at the MARIN research institute. The accessibility of the Tata Steel quay for its own bulk carriers must be taken into account, for example, but also whether there will be enough passage space along the long and very wide work vessels that will be mooring at the Energiehaven for the offshore wind sector. Furthermore, the sluice stream that flows from the discharge sluice from the North Sea Canal with considerable force must be taken into consideration.”
TATA STEEL
From the outset, Tata Steel has played a major role in driving the project. Tata Steel manager Anne Dekker has been involved in all
the planning since the start some seven years ago. Dekker: “The energy transition has accelerated the project. Together with all the other issues that were already pertinent, such as the government’s wish to empty the dredging depot, the need for a safe location for
the dolphins and the necessity for Tata Steel to load and unload in a more environmentally friendly manner at its own quay, this has resulted in this Energiehaven. This way, optimum use is made of the land. A completely new port location is emerging right next door to us. As Tata Steel, we will most likely make use of this at some point as well. It cannot go fast enough for us.”
