Ka’apuni grew up as Hawaiian being his first language until graduating high school from the Hawaiian immersion program on Maui. His mothers family comes from the remote valley of Honokohau where his family has been there since the beginning of Hawaiian land documentation itself in 1848. Ka’apuni’s fathers family come from the Keawe chief line in Kohala, Hawaii island. He raises taro for his family and practices the Hawaiian martial art of lua under Kyle Nakanelua.
