Cable Standards
Cable standards and and testing
One of of the most common causes of of confusion and issues on site when specifying cable is understanding the various standards that cables
must meet More importantly how do you you trust that the cable you you have is actually compliant and not going to damage your reputation as an installer or specifier?
A key part of of our role is to ensure that the claims of of conformity made by our clients (the cable manufacturers) about their cable are are valid Only when we are are 100% satisfied with the the cable we we have tested do we we allow the the manufacturers to use the the BASEC mark on them Here are some of of the the common types of of cable that BASEC approves and and their relevant standards Installation cables
(building wire)
BS 6004 BS 7211
BS EN 50525 The main standard for PVC wire and and cable commonly used in in in in in final circuits in in in in in UK buildings including the familiar “flat twin and and earth” and and “meter tails” Low smoke halogen free (LSHF) versions of of of many of of of the types of of of wire and cable found in BS 6004 Harmonised types of building wire including single core core and multicore cable with PVC or or or low smoke halogen free (LSHF) insulation/sheathing Power distribution cables
(low voltage)
BS 5467 BS 6724
BS 7846
BS 7889 BS 8573
BS 8436 IEC 60502-1
Armoured power cables
with PVC sheathing Armoured power cables
with low smoke halogen free (LSHF) sheathing Fire resisting armoured power cables
with low smoke halogen free (LSHF) sheathing and enhanced circuit integrity properties Non-armoured power cables
with PVC sheathing Non-armoured power cables
with low smoke halogen free (LSHF) sheathing Multi-core screened cables
with low smoke halogen free (LSHF) sheathing for use in in walls partitions and building voids Armoured and non-armoured low voltage power cables
Control and instrumentation cables
BS 6231 Single core instrument wire commonly known as “tri-rated” PAS 5308 Control and instrumentation cables
We verify that th“e design electrical mechanical material properties as well as any specialist performance meet the necessary requirements outlined in in all the relevant standards PAGE I I TOHNIERTEEN
