He grabbed her coat and said, “Listen to me. We need to go for a walk now.”
“He helped her with her coat, and she followed him out the door with her heart in her throat. He said nothing until they reached the park.
“Don’t look around, and keep walking. “We are being watched.”
She swallowed hard but maintained her composure.
“Listen carefully. I won’t be able to say this again. Soon I will be called back to do some unfinished business. I’ll be gone for awhile. I have a feeling that while I am away, people will try to kill you. Sorry, I don’t have much time, and I won’t lie to you. I’ll have a plan before I leave. When we walk here tomorrow, I’ll give it to you. I can’t trust your place. It might be bugged. Keep smil- ing. The people I’m talking about may be watching, and I don’t want them to suspect. It might prevent me from protecting you.”
Arnetta forced herself to smile for all she was worth, feeling her insides being ripped apart. She wondered what she had got- ten into and just as suddenly she didn’t care. Someone actually loved her in spite of what she had been forced into. She trusted him implicitly.
“When we get home, act normal. I have no idea what they know. Believe in me, I will get you out of this, and you will not have to worry about it again. He suddenly stopped, swung her around in front of him, and held her close. I promised you a different future, one full of good, and I will deliver. Do you believe that?”
“Yes,” she replied nodding her head.
He held her close to him scanning the area for anything un- usual. They held hands and slowly walked home. Trailing her into the apartment, he closed the door and grabbed her pad. “I will be in the bathroom while you prepare dinner,” he wrote.
In the bathroom, he wondered how to get her safely away. He mused sitting on the tub with her pad and fabricated a plan. “This will work, but I have to make a few preparations for it to be reliable.” They both ate and went to bed.
