Analog or Digital?
Analog systems are electric and an excellent platform for you to learn the skills needed in a traditional manner. Spinning with two turntables and a mixer, scratching vinyl to different genres is impressive.
Digital, an era in which we are still riding the waves, came on the scene with the Mp3’s, CDs, and the ability to manipulate music like none other. With the new formats being introduced, any good DJ had to embrace this change. No more Crates filled with vinyl, songs organized in computers, thumb drives, software that integrates hardware, and giving DJ’s the opportunity to produce incredible shows on their own; and don’t forget “mobility,” yes, this is the digital age. These are amazing times for the DJ’s industry.
Please know that both analog and digital have good and challenging qualities that directly correlate to how well each machine was made in its day and time. They both also have their own unique culture. But...during “the becoming stage of DJ’ing,” your crates of vinyl and your equipment are your lifeline. You have to be committed to the game. No one carries your crates but you. It’s not just an art
form, it’s hard labor and a major responsibility worth every bucket of sweat.
Like Erykah Badu once said, ‘I’m an analog girl in a digital world.’ I love that analog sound. I love vinyl, mixing, and scratching. However, I’m thrilled that I know how to do both analog and digital. I must admit, I do not miss the crates tho, way too many bruises and backaches, lol.
