I’m a lover of music, all different genres.
When I first started to DJ, I played what I enjoyed.
My friends and industry buddies kept telling me that if I wanted to break into the industry in a big way,
I needed to play more top 40 and pop music.
Life is funny like that. They meant well, and although their advice may be right for most. For me, staying true to myself would prove to be my key to success.
My first big break came when I was the Resident DJ at the world-renowned House of Blues in Hollywood, California. I just so happen to be DJ’ing next to the room where the iconic and legendary artist Prince gave his after-parties. I was in my groove playing the music I loved when some of his people came where
I was and loved my vibe. Soon after, I received a call informing me that Prince requested me to DJ one
of his parties. Due to my choice of music we hit it
off immediately! He asked me how I knew all of this music. This was the beginning of a 10-year worldwide experience as: DJ Rashida, Prince’s DJ.
Had I listened to the misguided advice and went totally against my grain and played top 40 and pop, who knows what would have happened. Had I been playing the kind of “formula” that people had been telling me would make me successful, I wouldn’t have gotten that gig.
Turns out, we ended up throwing some of the biggest “Hollywood” and Award Show house-after-parties that Hollywood had ever seen. Every A-list celebrity, artist and actors, and musicians, and countless others frequented and performed at these parties. You name them, and they were there... EPIC!
