                                       FEEDBACK ON ACADEMIC WRITING

Writing is the most difficult skill to develop in English, much more if it refers to academic
writing. There are many parameters that a writer must follow in order to succeed in this type of writing.

Content, style, grammar, punctuation, and references are the main points to consider writing an
academic essay. Most of the time, students write something to give it to the teacher and get a feedback.

But, what happens if instead of helping to improve, the feedback is a bunch of critics that discourage
students. Giving feedback is a difficult task that requires some parameters too. The teacher should

provide an explanation and examples of what students did wrong, use a specific and explicit rubric to

grade student’s writing, and improve the way in which the feedback is given.

Julie Moore’s article “Feedback on academic writing - Part One”, states that the majority of

students around the world learn better if the teacher gives them a feedback based on explanations and
examples of what they did wrong. It helps students to realize their mistakes and correct them

understanding why. “Teachers must focus on the content to check if students have understood the

topic. If students misunderstood the topic, the teacher should give them a brief explanation of what
they should have written.” (Moore, 2014) Other common mistakes that students have are in grammar,

punctuation, and references. A good strategy to give feedback on these things is to take notes of the
whole mistakes of students’ writings and correct them in class to everyone can review and learn. I

think she is right about giving feedback on academic writing because students need a guide that helps
them to understand what is accurate and inaccurate in their essays.

Using specific and explicit rubrics to grade student’s writing is also important to give a good

feedback. In rubrics, teachers can specify the parameters that are going to be graded. According to
Laura Reynolds in her article “Giving student feedback: 20 tips to do it right” rubrics are evaluation

instruments that help teachers to communicate their expectations for the assignment. “A good rubric
provides students specific information about what they need to write to get a ten over ten.” (Reynolds,
