Construction - Future Skills
Projects
• Retrofit
• Trust Mark
• Pentre Awel
• NET Zero Transition
• Freeport
• Heritage Buildings
• Hospital
• EV Charge installation
With retrofit and alternative building technology
at the forefront of discussion in this sector, it's
expected that there should be rising numbers of
trades people to support the domestic retrofit
targets, yet we are seeing drops in volumes in
these job roles, indicating the demand is low and
an element of scepticism from consumers.
Therefore, Construction trades may need to
diversify their skills to embed trust with
consumers.
Skills such as property pre & post retrofit
assessment, advice and customer care, Low
carbon heating installation, Technology
integration etc. Will all help to overcome current
scepticism.
In addition, upskilling the current construction
workforce for energy efficient buildings and new
sustainable heating technology is required. Trust
Mark requires PAS accredited assessors to
ensure retrofit systems are implemented
correctly.
We know the construction companies across the
region are busy with full order books and often
its’ difficult for them to release staff for training
or even plan for the near future. They require
short modular work placed assessed competence
upskill systems in place to aid the transition.

✓ Upskill the current workforce
✓ Promote the opportunities within
communities and throughout the
educational system.
✓ Help local businesses become part of the
supply chain for major projects via
procurement assistance and skills advice
✓ Close the gender imbalance
✓ Promote “Green Building” policy
✓ Encourage homeowners to uptake newer
technologies (create the demand)
Embedding new building technology in the
sector now will help aid the talent pool available
for ambitious projects such as Pentre Awel and
the new Hospital, projects that have a strong
desire to use local contractors to deliver smart,
sustainable structures integrated with smart
technology.
Local contractors will need new skills to achieve
this and could be honing some of those skills in
the domestic retrofit market
