TODAY’S VISITORS MERTHYR
On behalf of Brecon RFC, I extend a warm welcome to the Players, Committee, Members
and Supporters of Merthyr RFC. Within the Premiership, Merthyr are our nearest neighbours
and so this final home match of the season is as close as we come to playing a local derby.
Over the years the clubs have had many links with a number of our players having crossed the
Beacons to join the rapid progress and development of Merthyr RFC. In more recent times we
have seen a number of former Merthyr players making the journey in the other direction!
A number of our coaches, including Dale McIntosh and Gavin Dacey have had close connections
with Merthyr and so it is fitting that Dale’s final game as Head Coach at Brecon coincides with
us being pitted against a club which he previously coached with distinction. Dale has overseen
a transformation at Brecon having taken the mantle some three years ago when we were
battling in Division 1 East. Since then, we have been twice promoted, latterly to the Premiership
where we have held our own. With that as the background, we are anxious to ensure that this
match is a memorable one for the Club and for Dale.
We are, however, under no illusion that this will be anything but a stiff challenge. Merthyr stand
seven points clear of the rest of the field at the head of the Premiership table with a record of
18 wins and just 2 defeats and they have accumulated 1003 points in their 20 matches to date.
While they still have 4 matches to play, they are clearly favourites to win the Premiership. When
we faced them at The Wern on 21st December, we gave a good account of ourselves, coming
away with a try bonus point in a 47-37 defeat. That day a large crowd of spectators stood to
applaud both teams for their efforts, attitudes, and the quality of play. We will be looking for
much the same on this occasion. With both sides playing an attractive band of rugby, I am sure
we can look forward to an entertaining afternoon and who knows, perhaps even a giant killing
performance?
Regardless of the result, I wish Merthyr success over their few remaining games of this season.
Our visitors can be certain to receive a warm welcome, both at Parc de Pugh, where we can
enjoy our new Match Day Bar, and back at the Club House where Sharon, our stewardess, and
her great team, will make certain that we are all well catered for.

Good luck to everyone and enjoy the afternoon here in Brecon.
