 3.1 Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Energy
The Advanced Materials and Manufacturing sector continues to be an important economic driver for the region of South West & Mid Wales. Building on Wales’ rich heritage in heavy industry, the sector’s productivity in Wales is higher than the UK average supported by a total of 19,281 full and part time jobs. This is 17% above the national average.
Employment is largest in the following occupations:
• Metal working production and maintenance fitters (1,270)
• Production managers and directors in manufacturing (1,112)
• Welding trades (1,073)
• Metal machining setters and setter operators (748)
• Metal working and machine operatives (662)37
The sector is expected to see growth of 0.5% between 2019 and 2022 compared with the national average of 1.1%.
The Energy sector is supported by 37,254 full and part time jobs making it a key employment sector for the region although this figure sits 11% below the national average.
Employment is largest in the following occupations:
• Electricians and electrical fitters (1,812)
• Plumbers and heating and ventilating engineers (1,342)
• Production managers and directors in construction (1,029)
The sector is expected to see growth of 2% between 2019 and 2022 which is higher than the national average of 1.2%.
