 Skills Challenges
The majority of respondents to the skills survey (65%) indicated that they are experiencing skills challenges, with these challenges being more prevalent within skilled trades occupations (75%), followed by process, plant and machine operatives (18%) and managers, directors and senior officials (16%).
The highest reported skills challenges are;
• Specialist skills or knowledge needed to perform the role (66%),
• Knowledge of products and services offered by the organisation (26%),
• Problem solving (25%),
• Communication skills (22%),
• Reading and understanding instructions (14%).
An analysis of the top hard and soft skills required by employers within the sector recruiting between January 2018 -2019 corroborate these findings;

55% of respondents reported having experienced difficulty recruiting for specific roles. Amongst those most commonly reported are; engineers, skilled trades people (i.e. plumbers, carpenters and bricklayers), architectural roles, site and project managers and quantity surveyors.
