The team really has embraced its nickname. It’s fair to say that lots of Welsh clubs have done the same, although perhaps not to such a successful extent. A nickname is familiar, reassuring – identifiable, and most clubs will have one to some extent. At semi-pro level in Wales, in the Premiership, we have The All Whites (Swansea), The Blue and Blacks (Cardiff), The Black and Ambers (Newport), The Drovers (Llandovery), The Ironmen (Merthyr), The Ravens (Bridgend), The Steelmen (Ebbw Vale), The Valley Commandos (Pontypridd) and The Wizards (Aberavon).
Away from the glitz and the glamour of the regions and the semi-professional outfits of the Premiership, to join with Treorchy's Zebras, there's a whole wild menagerie of other animal nicknames to be found: The Badgers (Pontyclun), The Brocks (Hirwaun), The Bulls (Builth Wells), The Cockerels (Croesyceiliog), The Cuckoos (Risca), The Donks (Penclawdd), The Ducks (Wattstown), The Foxes (Bedlinog), The Lambs (Blaina), The Monkeys (Morriston), The Mules (Kenfig Hill), The Otters (Narbeth), The Owls (Brynithel), The Phoenixes (Treharris), The Pigs (Newbridge), The Sharks (Ynysowen), The Snakes (Aberdare), The Squirrels (Rhiwbina), The Tigers (Tylorstown), and The Unicorns (Nelson) to name a selection.
