Samaritans in the squad may have forwarded the information to certain individuals with the odd text message to those away at University for example (no pictures though, as camera phones were still in their infancy!) but for the vast majority, players would have to call by the clubhouse (which was always closed on a Thursday so we couldn’t even enjoy a pint for our troubles!) to see the team selection, in black and white, pinned up in the window for ourselves.
Perhaps it’s looking back with a misplaced sense of nostalgia, but there was something special about that laborious routine. As a youngster it was a particular privilege to see my name on the list for the first time – nestled in the line-up amidst players who I’d looked up to and respected for a time.
Match days are also different. Many a club now have fancy electronic scoreboards, rendering the job of the manual scorekeeper obsolete. But new technologies result in new tasks too, with a high number of clubs now recording their matches in order to use the footage to assist coaches on the training paddocks.
