floodlights are later fused with the internal haze of clubhouse lights as drinks are shared in the warmth after games, with clubhouses glowing like beacons in the winter gloom.
Soon, the Six Nations arrive, and as spring begins to blossom, the fresh air offers some relief whilst players traverse the steadily hardening pitches. Post-match, excursions to the beer gardens are a welcome reprieve after being cloistered away for the winter. Then, as the clocks go forward and jolt us towards early May, many clubs will be harnessed with a backlog of fixtures due to the winter postponements and find themselves playing on tough terrain on weekends and in midweek, the increasingly warm air a forerunner of summer as the evenings begin to stretch out before us.
And then the season is over and the curtains come down. After the final whistle of the last game has sounded, it is time to take stock of it all, before the hard pitches are, soon enough, pounded once more in anticipation of another season. It’s cyclical. Constant. Seasonal. Part of rugby’s charm is that the process seems never-ending and that no matter how tough things may get, there will always be next season...
