Supporting Information
For a more detailed look at specific Skills provision in
the county a Barometer report compiled by the
Swansea Bay City Deal Skills and Talent Team
matches up skills needs to education provision. The
below future major projects were the focus of the
report:
• Celtic Freeport
• Baglan energy park
• Harbourside
• GCRE
• Wildfox Resort
• Y Bryn Windfarm
• Homes as Power Stations (HAPS)
• Supporting Innovation and Low Carbon
Growth (SILCG)
• Neath Port Talbot Hospital
Information on skills requirements for the projects
were derived from available secondary research
online. This information was then matched to
existing qualifications being delivered within Neath
Port Talbot, and the information on qualifications
was taken from the skills barometer data collated by
the Swansea Bay Skills and Talent team.
Whilst it’s not possible for the barometer to map all
provision from all training providers in NPT due to
only capturing courses that are fully funded by Welsh
Government, the barometer does include most WBL
courses available.
Grwp Llandrillo Menai, Coleg Cambria, NPTC group,
Pembrokeshire college and Gower college offer
various marine pathways in engineering.
STEM related provision offered at Further Education
level is sufficient for the future projects outlined.
Moreover, both Swansea university and UWTSD
combined have a strong offer in terms of
undergraduate and postgraduate courses in
maritime, the sciences and in digital.
UWTSD, have strong collaborative departments and
research areas such as:
• Advanced Manufacturing Skills Academy (AMSA)
• The Wales Centre for Advanced Batch Manufacture
(CBM)
• Construction Wales Innovation Centre (CWIC)
• Assistive Technologies Innovation Centre (ATIC)
• Manufacture Advanced Design Engineering (MADE)
Different pathways are available and more will
become available as tertiary education
becomes more employer led. Employer led
apprenticeship pathways allows flexibility on
the employer to form their own
apprenticeship package with the apprentice. A
local employer may choose an education
provider in North Wales for example and days
in college can be arranged between the
provider and the apprentice. It’s useful to
know that apprenticeship offers aren’t
geographically limited.
These great examples of learning provision do
need to be widely and positively
communicated to learners to ensure
consistent and regular uptake
The Skills Barometer report can be used in
harmony with this skills summary report to
provide much greater detail on the county
requirements.
