Page 8 - Pathways to Your Future
P. 8
Currently around 20% of UK energy supplies enter Britain via Pembrokeshire
and South West Wales has strong ambitions to be the UK leader in
renewable energy over the next 10 years.
But what does that mean for career choices?
According to the National Grid in the UK, it has estimated that they alone
need to fill 400,000 roles by 2050 if we are to reach the Net Zero target,
around 25,000 new roles will be across Wales, but that’s just one
organisation and one project, there are many others with huge volumes of
jobs required.
Our region has made a strong start to the Net Zero ambition with projects
already underway such as:
✓ FLOW (Floating Offshore Wind)
✓ DARE in Neath Port Talbot
✓ Dragon Energy Island
✓ The Hydrogen Centre
✓ Blue Eden Project
✓ Battery Manufacturing
✓ EV charging stations
To name just a few…..
There is fast becoming a wealth of job opportunities in this sector as it
sets to become a very important part of our local economy
How do we know this?
➢ Energy is becoming the fastest emerging market in the UK as we head for
low emission energy security
➢ The skill shortages are evident, the volume of work is increasing at a
much faster pace than the labour supply. This results in the Energy
sector advertised average salary increasing 30% since 2020
➢ Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW). It is forecast that by 2030 there will be
104,401 jobs in offshore wind in the UK
➢ Hydrogen generation, carbon capture & distribution, solar and on shore
wind will also require more skilled workers.
➢ Future skills mapping is huge, many new and evolving trades, many
trades will be transferable from / to other sectors.
