T“h e f i x t u r e s a r e something to put in the calendar, engagements to punctuate the ‘nothing days’ between Christmas and New Year and are a heady dose
of excitement and delight before long and listless Januarys...
Spectacle wise, it’s perfect, even if the quality of rugby on offer isn’t always up to all that much. Two fierce rivals going at it in the mud, as expectant fans stand on the side-lines and pass judgement. The older folk can usually be found in their thermals and new warm coats, the younger generations more like proverbial peacocks in their new shirts or dresses, showing off their new garb and happy to be out after Christmas. Most have pints or a bottle of something in hand and the thought of hours of merrymaking and good cheer laying ahead of them on their minds.
Boxing Day matches – as synonymous with Christmas as mulled wine, mince pies and pigs in blankets for the true rugby aficionado. Merry Christmas, one and all!
