There are certain people in life who are obsessives. Meticulous and quirky, they like their numbers, recording data and keeping up to date records. Often an introverted bunch, they’ll keep the press cuttings from the local papers in an organised archive. They’ll update appearances, tries and points for each player, painstakingly and precisely noting it all down on a Saturday evening. They may well be able to tell you against whom a particular player made his or her debut or against which team a player became a centurion. They’ll be able to recall seasons from decades ago, explaining how each side did this or that, or how some particularly highly charged derby game panned out.
At professional level, the commitment of these ‘anorak’ fans is often ridiculed and the obsessive nature of these individuals are not understood or comprehended by the masses. Yet at amateur level, this commitment can be supercharged – and long may it continue.
