With evidence suggesting that senior player numbers are dwindling here in Wales, the need for a thriving mini and junior section is self-evident. It is an encouraging fea- ture that there are numerous girls’ sides springing up throughout the country, reflect- ing the growth of the national game and more evidence that rugby union is a game for everyone. The environment within a mini and junior section shapes and moulds the players for future seasons, not just in terms of skill and physical ability but in terms of the subtle development of temperament, discipline and commitment. It may be easy to forget that when 20 or so seven year olds are all chasing wildly after the same rugby ball on parks and pitches on Sunday mornings. Rugby poetry it may not always yet be, but it’s a noble undertaking that pays dividends, nevertheless.
