O“nbig, cheerfulnightsafterwins, there’llinevitablybemischief and merrymaking going on with shouts and laughter ringing out through the rooms.”
Travel throughout South Wales’ rugby clubhouses on a Saturday evening and you’ll find a whole host of various drinking games being played – and there’s usually some tall tales and plenty of hijinks to go along with them. With such bonhomie and bustle in the room, there’ll also always inevitably be ‘a kitty’ for the boys to buy into to save themselves frequent, laborious trips to the busy bar. If lucky enough, a team may receive some jugs of lager, beer or cider from a proud chairmen or half-pissed match sponsor, a fair and welcome reward for the afternoon’s toil.
No one likes to queue, of course, but when the said queue reflects a sense of vibrancy in a clubhouse, and naturally within the wider ‘club’ itself, the frustration is tempered somewhat. When you’re talking about results and performances with friends and foes alike whilst waiting in the queues, there’ll always be some topic to keep your mind occupied.
And then time ticks on and it’s the end of the night. “Closing time - you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here, boys.” The young bucks often slip off into town to drink some more and raise hell elsewhere; many of the older heads may just sensibly slope off home, stumbling into the night, groggy but satisfied - and acutely aware of the ramifications that a following morning’s hangover could bring.
