I’d say that an Ugly referee is one who gives an unfair advantage to a side, quite often swayed by a vociferous and vocal home crowd. If you’re playing a game and you see your referee calling numerous opposition players by their first name then you can usually tell in which direction your Saturday is about to go. Only once – mercifully – have I seen this logic been turned on its head. I once saw a referee tell a few of my teammates and I, as we were about to kick off, “I live by this lot and I can’t f*****g stand them. Watch this...” before proceeding to ‘ping’ (or referee) the said ‘lot’ out of the game, penalising them for everything he possibly could – and more! It was glorious. Well, for us, at least...
