 The Wye Valley Walk
A wonderful long distance walk with 136 miles of river and hill walking, taking you through ancient woodlands, glorious orchards and natural meadows full of wild flowers. Teeming with wildlife, buzzards, red kites, butterflies and bats, giving a real nature experience. Passing through historic border towns of Monmouth, Hereford and Hay-on-Wye, look out for the stunning Tintern Abbey, Hereford Cathedral and Goodrich Castle.
The Wye Valley River Festival
A celebration of nature, culture, landscape and life along the River Wye, the Wye Valley River Festival runs in early May over a two week period. Combining music, performers and entertainers with incredible landscapes and settings, there’s something for the whole family. Crossing the border in and out of England and Wales, make sure you have your festival passport ready.
Symonds Yat
Further into south Herefordshire Symonds Yat straddles the River Wye, with its magnificent natural landscapes and beautiful wooded expanses. Stretching into the Forest of Dean
and the Wye Valley AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) it is ideal for walking, cycling, climbing and river pursuits. The waters have cut a deep gorge into the limestone rocks, creating towering cliffs, a magnet to climbers, with Symonds Yat Rock; a 120 metre high viewpoint from where you might see the resident Peregrine Falcons. Cross the river on one of the two ancient hand-pulled ferries or investigate the nearby ‘King Arthur’s Caves’ where archaeological discoveries include the remains of a sabre-toothed tiger.
Dotted along the banks are plenty of visitor attractions including a maze, butterfly zoo, oriental gardens and plenty of restaurants and pubs to quench your thirst in. Or enjoy one of the pleasure cruises for the best views of the valley from the water.
Look out for the Scandinavian-style chalet overlooking the river wye where the latest Netflix sensation ‘Sex Education’ is filmed, the series having had over 40 million views within its opening month in January 2019.
