Page 3 - ESL Ultimate Guide to Herefordshire
P. 3

Welcome to
Herefordshire, The Wye Valley and The Marches
These three incredibly beautiful regions have long intertwined and overlapped and in this guide we showcase their modern day delights as well as the historic snippets of how they came to be.
2020 Highlights
Herefordshire
Herefordshire might be one of the least populated counties in the country, but it is known as one of the most entrepreneurial. Home to iconic brands like Bulmers, Westons and Tyrrells we can now add the famous Chase Vodka and Williams Gin – go for a brilliant distillery tour behind the scenes.
On the foodie front Pensons restaurant, on the east Herefordshire border, has newly achieved the county’s only Michelin Star, while Hereford City’s distinctive Green Dragon Hotel has just completed a beautiful cosmetic refurbishment thanks to new owners and management.
The Wye Valley
This year The Wye Valley celebrates 250 years as the birthplace of tourism, with a tribute to William Gilpin who first put the River Wye and the market town of Ross- on-Wye on the map.

Charting the Wye Tour as a tourism route in the first ever visitor guide books, this went on to inspire the Picturesque Movement, where people took time to visit beautiful places.
The Marches
The Marches will always be known for its famous battle grounds, like the Battle of Mortimers Cross in the War of the Roses, and conversely for its genteel and incredibly pretty 40 mile Black and White Village Trail. These timeless attributes and inter-border connections make it a simply stunning place to eat, sleep and enjoy.
