Construction and electrical trades will be at the
heart of the energy transformation, and will be
required across multiple sectors, including but
not limited to:
Construction - Homes as Power Stations,
Retrofit, FLOW
Transportation – EV, charging points, EV vehicle
technicians
Energy – Renewables, FLOW
Agriculture – Emissions capture, automation
systems, renewable energy, machinery
When looking at Electrician trades in the county
we see there are some concerns:
From 2003 to 2015 there was a steady increase
in electrical roles across the county however,
other than a spike in 2019, there has been a
decline in Electrician roles since 2015 of 18%
whilst the UK increased by 2% (Figure 1)
(Figure 2) details the job posting trend for the
same occupations over the last 3 years, it's clear
there is a coloration in 2019 to job adverts in
conjunction with the spike in jobs that year,.
Although this is where coloration seems to end .
Since 2021 job posting intensity for these roles is
at a similar level to the spike in 2019, however
there is a 18% decrease in jobs. This indicates
that there is a recruitment / talent pool shortfall.
Since 2018
Electricians and Electrical installation occupations
have reduced by 62%
Vehicle Technicians, (Mechanical and Electrical)
reduced by 49%
Construction trades
Compared to other regions, in 2023
Pembrokeshire has an over representation of
construction jobs, This is not an accident or
anything to be concerned about. From 2011 jobs
in Construction were in huge decline until 2019,
however collages and employers have worked
hard to address this, and the county has now
seen a 29.5% increase in construction jobs since.
This excellent work to grow the sector needs to
continue, with construction being at the heart of
the energy and Net Zero transition. The
challenge now is to ensure those construction
roles are upskilled in new net zero technology.

Electrical Trades job posting trend - Pembrokeshire
The data suggests that the lack of significant
growth in job numbers over the past 20 years
for these trades may have been a result of less
demand for these types of roles. However,
looking at near future requirements and the
recent spike in job postings for these roles, it is
safe to assume that electrical & construction
trades will be in high demand, albeit the
competences of these roles may evolve more
towards sustainable systems.

“There were just 60,000 heat pumps installed in
the UK last year, making it one of the slowest
adopters of this new technology in Europe.
At current rates of installation, it will take more
than 400 years before every British home has a
heat pump.
The UK only has 4,000 trained heat-pump
installers - it is estimated we will need 27,000 by
2028”
