P. 4

Information taken from the ONS 2021 census data.
Between the last two censuses (held in 2011 and
2021), the population of Pembrokeshire increased by
just 0.8%, from just over 122,400 in 2011 to around
123,400 in 2021.
This means Pembrokeshire's population increased at
a smaller rate to the overall population of Wales. The
population of Wales increased by 1.4%, from
3,063,000 to 3,107,000. Between the last two
censuses.
The average (median) age of Pembrokeshire
increased by three years, from 45 to 48 years of age
resulting in a higher average (median) age than
nearby Carmarthenshire (46 years) and a higher
average (median) age than Wales as a whole (42
years).
The number of people aged 65 to 74 years rose by
just under 3,100 (an increase of 21.3%), while the
number of residents between 35 and 49 years fell by
just over 4,000 (17.2% decrease)..
There has been an increase of 20.6% in people aged
65 years and over, a decrease of 4.9% in people aged
15 to 64 years, and a decrease of 5.5% in children
aged under 15 years.
When looking at working age populations (16-64)
there are circa 70,400 residents (just 57% of the
population) however 22% of these are 50-64 and will
be due to retire within the next 15 years
The key element of this information is when we look
and compare the 50–64 age group with the 10-15
population. The 10-15’s make up just 7% of the
population, yet the due to retire in the same time
window 50 – 64 age group make up 22%. Therefore, a
potential issue to fill the retirement hole in the
coming years.
This however does not provide a completed picture;
social issues need also to be considered.
Economic activity: Out of the 15,700 inactive residents
aged between 16 -64 30% are long term sick
equating to just under 5,000 people:
Over 2000 residents within the inactive cohort have
stated they would like a job, a system of reaching
these people would help the current demographic
situation.
