AM Y BATHODYN
FOR THE BADGE
As we move towards celebrating 60 years of Gwernyfed RFC it has been fantastic to witness the
support of spectators, sponsors, parents and families and their enjoyment of the style of rugby
that Gwernyfed seniors played home and away last season.
Although we left some points out there, overall
2023/24 was a successful season for the 1st XV just
missing out on promotion, coming 3rd place in the
strongly competitive East Division 4 and in effect
making the forthcoming season harder for ourselves
as these teams now know what we’re capable of.
I am proud of the achievement and of the standard
of rugby played under the guidance of our coaching
team. I must record here the positive coaching
contribution made by Richard East last season to the
team’s performance.
Joining the coaching staff this year we welcome
Ebbw Vale stalwart Alun Phillips and team manager
James Evans. Along with Sam Stephen’s pivotal
contribution as captain, supported by vice captain
Jack Sol Williams.
Last season, we were in the fortunate position of
often fielding an Athletic side which supports the 1st
XV and is a good platform for the less experienced
and younger players.
We failed to field a Youth team but under the
leadership of Geraint Skyrme, coaches Darren
Dunster Roe, Dave Roberts and Gerwyn Williams
hope to develop an under 17s squad and Youth
team to play competitive rugby this season.
Chris McGowan worked hard as Mini & Junior
Chairman last season and it is good to see the minis
and juniors thriving. As I often say, if we support,
encourage and look after our youngsters in the mini
and junior section then the club and our success
will look after itself.
Proud of the achievements and
the standard of rugby played under
the guidance of our coaching team.
