O'R GAPTEN
FROM THE CAPTAIN
Little did I think when I had my first stint as captain, aged 23 during the Club’s 50th year, that I
would still be gracing the Trefecca Road turf, let alone be honoured to be asked back as captain
for the Club’s 60th year anniversary.
But who could resist the lure of another season and
perhaps there is a place for a old timer such as
myself to guide what is undoubtedly a dearth of real
talent that we currently have in our playing squads?
There is no accident or luck in this, the coaching
team and club management must take a lot of
credit for their hard work over the last year or more,
we enjoyed steady improvement last season and we
start 24/25 with strong foundations that we must
now look to build upon.
A captain of a young squad must tread the line
between nurturing the talents at his disposal and
keeping their feet firmly planted; not letting the tail
wag the dog. As a playing group we desperately
want to push on from last year's positives and
competing at the top of the league and have a
strong showing in the cup.
But we are no longer the new boys in the league -
having made the switch across from East Central and
we are all too aware that we will have to be at our
very best, week in week out, if we are serious about
our intentions. At the time of writing we are a couple
of weeks into pre season and I'm pleased to report,
so far so good.
One thing I tell my players is this, to be a good
player you obviously have to be fit, tough, strong etc
but the absolute most important thing you have to
be is a team player, respect for the team and holding
yourself accountable to it is the real recipe for
success and if we can do that throughout this season
I'm sure we won't be far off the pace.
Thank you for all your support!
Looking forward to an
exciting and successful season...
Sam Stephens
1st XV Captain
