MERCHED
WOMEN’S SECTION
The last season has seen a huge influx of new players to the ladies squad which is a reflection of
the team ethos and desire to share their love of the game.
It has been a real privilege to see the team come
together with those more experienced taking
on leadership roles within the squad and
embedding into the foundations that make our
team what it is.
For us, last season was not about trophies but the
achievements. Two players Shanelle and Tilly,
being awarded their first Wales under 18 caps,
shows the pathway that this club has created in
hosting and supporting the Red Kites.
There were days when half the team on the pitch
were made up of players who have come through
the girls rugby hub pathway, be that the Kites or
elsewhere, and this is truly encouraging for the
future of the game.
With Becky Rees as vice captain, we took the team
to fixtures both home and away with our heads held
high, knowing that we were going to play our style
of rugby and confident in the ability and strength of
the team travelling with us.
Finishing the season by beating Blackwood away in a
nail biting finale with lightning striking the pitch and
the feeling of elation among the squad summed up
our season. Sticking together, putting on boots to
help each other out (even getting changed on the
sideline from supporter to player if needed!) is what
this team is about. Long may it continue.
With another year in the Championship, the future
looks bright from Gwernyfed’s Women and the
coming season is ours to seize.
Our future looks bright and
the coming season is ours to seize.
