1868 First recorded rugby match played in
Brecon on 21st March between a Brecon Team
and Abergavenny. In October Brecon Town
Football (Rugby Club) is formed.
1875 H.W. Davies, Brecon Club secretary, invited
representatives of all other South Wales Clubs to
a meeting at the Castle Hotel, Brecon where the
South Wales Football Club was formed.
1881 A Welsh select team played England at
Blackheath in February. A member of the Welsh
team was a Brecon club committee member,
R. D. Garnons Williams (Standing far right), later
to be killed in action during WW1. The team was
soundly defeated and the repercussions led to
the formation of the Welsh Rugby Union following
a meeting of 11 Clubs at the Castle Hotel Neath.
Brecon RFC was one of the Founding Members.
1885 E.P. Alexander, Brecon, wins his first of his
5 Welsh Caps against Scotland.
1898 Brecon defeated Llwynypia in the SW
Challenge Cup. Llwynypia, at the time, was a
premier Welsh team boasting a number of
internationals, including Willie Llewelyn. The
Western Mail report stated that, “Brecon scored
one of the prettiest tries I have ever seen and we
shall hear more of this Club.”
Standing on the far right is G.Hyatt Williams,
Brecon Town Clerk. He served as an officer of the
club and referee.
1914 to 1927 Rugby ended in Brecon with the
onset of WW1. The team reformed in 1919 but
struggled to find the support it had experienced
before the War. D.V.P. Lewis took on the role of
captain in 1926 and 27 but the club then seems to
gone into decline with no further record of Rugby
in the Town until 1946.
1946 Brecon RFC was re-formed. W.H. (Bill)
Clement, former secretary of the WRU joins the
Club. Bill won 6 Welsh caps just prior to the War
and went on the 1938 Lions Tour to South Africa.
1963 Ken Rowlands successfully establishes
Brecon Youth team.
1966 Brecon RFC moves into its first Clubhouse
at No 10 The Struet.
1968 Brecon RFC regains WRU Club status.
1974 First Overseas Tour to Germany.
1978 Purchase of Parc de Pugh leads to move
from the Gas Works Pitch.
