Electrical trades will be at the heart of the energy
transformation, and will be required across
multiple sectors, including but not limited to:
Construction - Homes as Power Stations,
Retrofit, Blue Eden, District Heating
Transportation – EV, charging points, EV vehicle
technicians
Energy – Renewables
Manufacturing – Industrial emissions reduction,
automation systems and energy efficiency
When looking at Electrician trades in the county
we see there are some concerns: Looking the
seven core SOC job roles of:
• Electricians and Electrical Fitters
• Vehicle Technicians, Mechanics and
Electricians
• Routine Inspectors and Testers
• Electrical and Electronic Trades
• Electrical Engineers
• Assemblers (Electrical and Electronic Products)
• Electrical and Electronics Technicians
There is a downward trend in jobs since
2003(Figure 1) with 39% less people employed in
these trades. yet since 2018 job postings for
these roles has been steadily increasing (Figure
2)

Electricians and Electrical Fitter occupations have
reduced by 43%
Vehicle Technicians, Mechanics and Electricians
reduced by 35%
Electrical and Electronic Trades reduced by 27%
Electrical Engineers reduced by 26%

The data suggests that the decline in job
numbers over the past 20 years for electrical
trades may have been a result of less demand
for these types of roles. However, looking at
near future requirements and the recent spike
in job postings for these roles, it is safe to
assume that electrical trades will be in high
demand during the Net Zero transition, albeit
the competences of these roles may evolve
more towards sustainable systems.
